Trauma‑sensitive practice should be woven into school culture and developed over many years. It doesn’t happen overnight; it needs to be modelled, practised, embedded and regularly reviewed.

We welcome any school or organisation taking steps in this direction. Every step forward matters. Language is important, but don’t let the fear of not getting it perfect stop you from improving outcomes for children - nobody is the finished article.

Regular reflection or supervision helps staff provide consistent, high‑quality care. Staff wellbeing is essential; it is the foundation for supportive, thriving environments for children.

Why Corridor Kids?

Over the years, I am frequently contacted by principals and teachers across the county seeking advice on supporting pupils who are struggling to access learning. I often refer to these children as "the corridor kids", the ones who are out doing jobs around the school, seeking connection with the SET teacher, or receiving regular red card warnings. These children are barely surviving in our schools; they need relational support from us.

While I am always delighted to share strategies and resources, it has become increasingly difficult to meet these requests in person due to the high levels of need within my own school.

So, what have I done instead?

I have developed a comprehensive interactive e-learning course that allows whole school communities to engage in professional learning together without requiring me to attend in person.

Meet the Course Creator

Emma Stokes is a special school principal with extensive experience working with children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties. Her work with a highly marginalised group has established her as an expert in trauma-informed educational practices.

As principal of a special school, Emma has developed deep expertise in supporting children in distress and creating school environments that prioritise emotional safety, connection, and regulation. This hands-on experience, combined with her understanding of the daily realities faced by educators, makes her uniquely qualified to design professional learning that truly works in practice.
